How’s YOUR immunity, and why should you care?

There’s a new understanding of COVID emerging.

It suggests the disease attacks the immune system rather than the lungs—yet the government is threatening strategies that could help. Weird.

COVID, as we have seen, is generally considered and publicised to be a respiratory disease (formerly known as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, or SARS-CoV-2).

So what’s changed?

A new study out of Israel has cast COVID disease in a new light, suggesting that immune dysfunction may come before respiratory issues associated with COVID disease. This adds to evidence that immune-boosting antioxidants and other supplements may be of great use for COVID prevention and treatment.

As we’ve also seen, the respiratory damage caused by COVID infection has received the most attention during the pandemic, but the new study adds to research emphasizing the damage done by the virus to the immune system.

Israeli researchers found that the mitochondria, the power centre of cells – with a huge role in cell respiration and energy production, were particularly damaged in the immune systems of COVID patients—not in the lungs or respiratory tract. We know that the immune system relies heavily on mitochondrial activity. The damage to mitochondria in the immune system helps explain the cytokine storm—the excessive, pro-inflammatory response in COVID patients that leads to severe outcomes like lung injury and multi-organ failure.

The researchers concluded that, if this proves correct, patient outcomes could be improved with antioxidant supplements. A number of readily available supplements may help support mitochondrial function, including CoQ10 and ubiquinol, L-carnitine, arginine, alpha-lipoic-acid, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, B vitamins, selenium, and NADH.

On a personal note, my whole family just passed through the CV gate. We all had it in varying intensity and were lucky enough that it was equal, at its worst, to a mild ‘flu.

We understand that we can’t claim anything valuable from a sample of three (our family) but we can share what we do and have done for many years. We have molecular hydrogen every day and have done for around 21 years. I can say that in that time I have NEVER had a cold or flu. Again, it’s a sample of one and therefore statistically irrelevant, so you can take not and investigate more or not. Up to you.

We like H2 because the studies of it indicate that it is quite a unique form of antioxidant; not of itself but as a way of supporting glutathione, our own naturally generated antioxidant. It also has the size to penetrate any barrier within the body, making it capable of entering the mitochondria.

I’ll just say one final thing. It makes sense to me that our immunity levels, our ability to maintain sufficient levels of antioxidants and to live a lifestyle that doesn’t generate inflammation.. especially today! And as my family doctor told me years ago.. Prevention is better than cure!
